A member asked:

High triglycerides so they put me on allopurinol is this going to help?

Different: Allopurinol must be being used for something else. It does not treat high triglycerides. Allopurinol should be used for patients that have frequent recurrent gout attacks, kidney stones (only if uric acid stones), for tophi (gout deposits under the skin), gout bone erosions, or with some types of chemotherapy. Allopurinol lowers uric acid in the blood but only is used if one of the above occur.

NO: Allopurinol is not a treatment for high triglycerides. It is used to treat gout. There is an association between gout and cardiovascular risk factors, and often high triglycerides and elevated uric acid can be seen together in patients with metabolic syndrome ( obesity, high blood pressure , elevated blood sugar, low HDL and high tg's) but triglycerides are treated differently.
