Generally not: Tough love usually does not work as a sole intervention to deal with addiction. This requires a multifaceted approach in order to have some reasonable chance of success. The part of tough love that involves not giving into all of the unreasonable demands of the addicted person, and protecting yourself and family from the transgressions that an addict may engage in do often seem appropriate.
