Position: Your baby can have difficulty latching due to the position in which you try to feed her. In any position, try to completely align your nipple with her mouth. Try to begin feeding before she is frantic trying to latch on. If you can anticipate her needs, the latch will be easier.

Maternal and infant : Many factors may affect latching on. Mom may be engorged or her nipples flat, making it difficult to latch on. The baby must open wide enough to take in the areola. Ask your pediatrician or lactation consultant to watch you feeding, and give you specific guidance. The rewards of breast feeding are worth the initial effort!
