What is the best way to manage a varicocele?

Dr. Ted King answered

Support: Not all varicoceles need to be treated. Most of the time, if anything is needed, scrotal support is all that is necessary. Reasons to fix a varicocele would be pain, infertility, or if a teenaged boy has testicle atrophy. Treatment options include microsurgery or laparoscopic varicocelectomy, done by a urologist, or embolization of the vein, done by an interventional radiologist.

Here are...: Do nothing if no need arises; this is best. Do something if there is a concern for male infertility, its related pain as clinically suspected and judged, or impaired testicular growth in puberty/adolescence. To urologist, microscopic varicocelectomy is best; to some interventional radiologist, varicocele embolization is best. Just ask and choose.
