Clotting factor: When activated, prothrombin becomes thrombin, which among other effects turns fibrinogen into the stick for fibrin to create a molecular meshwork that will become the basis for the scab. Protrombin time is a conventional name for one assay of the ability of the clotting factors (not platelets) to keep blood in the vessels.
