The legal definition: Will vary from state to state. In general, spouse abuse or domestic violence is an act or threat of violence, coercion, control, punishment, intimidation, or revenge against a person with whom the perpetrator has had an intimate relationship. It can include physical, sexual or emotional abuse or intimidation. If in doubt, talk to a women's shelter or a physician, psychologist, lawyer, etc.

Legal terms: Spousal abuse is a legal term. Abuse either physical or psychological doesn't really have a different definition based on relationships. For example child abuse is still abuse. Abusing your spouse is still abuse. Any and all abuse is reportable, in fact, mandated to be reported by medical professionals.
