Significant disease: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a condition in which the heart muscle becomes thick, and obstruction to outflow may occur. Arrhythmias may occur as well. It is commonly inherited, first degree relatives should be screened. Patients may have severe symptoms, or no symptoms at all. It is a common cause of death in young athletes who seemed completely healthy.

Heart disease: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a condition where part of the heart muscle is larger than normal. This can cause lethal heart rhythms and cause people to pass out. It is a common presentation in athletes who pass out suddenly while exercising. Treatment can rage from taking a medication to requiring an internal defibrillator. Patients with this condition need to be seen regularly by a cardiologist
