No baby can.: No baby (premature or term) can/should eat solid food for several months after birth.

Depends: We don't feed premature or term babies solids until they are mature enough to benefit from the material. When a premi has matured enough to benefit, generally when they sit up and start to lose their tongue thrust, we feed them just like any other baby.Fifty years ago it was common to feed solids early, to make up for deficiencies in home made formula.Not today.
