Define often: Newborns have transient maternal antibody protection that wears off over 3-4 mo.From that point until 5y they average 5-7 respiratory & 3 diarrheal illness/yr. After 5 it drops a bit, yet infants do have regular low grade to moderate illnesses as they build there own immune system. A combination of frequent mouthing behaviors & exposure to similar age kids sets the stage for many illnesses.
