Depends: It really depends on what you want and what qualifications your dentist has. Soem dentists ( and all oral surgeons) are trained in anesthesia techniques to put you to sleep. If you are afraid of the procedure and don't want to feel anything, then you may want IV anesthesia.

Your choice: Unless you state what you would like most dentists will just numb your mouth. Some general dentists don't sedate people and will refer out if asked to be sedated by the patient. It's your mouth and you should tell your dental care team how you would like to go through with the procedure. Sedation will cost you more though.

Either or Both: Even when you get sedation a local anesthetic is almost always used in conjuction with the sedation. Which one you get will be between you and your dentist.

Numb-Local Anesthesi: Most extractions are done with local anesthesia, 2% Lidocaine (xylocaine) with a very small amount of epinephine to increase depth of numbness & the duration. General anesthesia is usually not done due to very small risks, but high malpractice costs. Many dentists (especially oral surgeons) are well trained in conscious sedation with nitrous oxide gas &/or I.V. Or oral sedatives to relax you.
