Antiparasitic Meds: Toxoplasmosis is caused by a parasite, and as such, is treated during pregnancy with anti-parasitic medication. Pyrimethamine is one option; if one is treated with Pyrimethamine during pregnancy, it is important to also supplement with folinic acid, since Pyrimethamine is a folate (folic acid) antagonist. Your doctor can work with you to determine the specific anti-parasitic to use.

Toxoplasmosis: If pregnancy has not reached the 16th week, the use of "spiramycin" may be used to eradicate toxoplasma parasites. If later, toxoplasmosis can affect the unborn fetus on a neurological basis. Ask your OB provider about treatment or prevention of ill effects for your pregnancy.
