Thyroid scan prep: Generally eat nothing 2 hours before the test. Avoid foods with iodine—shellfish, iodized salt, or kelp (seaweed, including nori on sushi). Your doc should advise you concerning meds that may interfere with the test (ones with iodine, such as cough syrups, multivitamins, or the heart medicine amiodarone; thyroid meds).

Not for hyperthyroid: The preparation for thyroid uptake and scans for hyperthyroidism varies among practices. I don't ask my patients to go through a low-iodine diet if their problem is hyperthyroidism. However, 2 weeks of a low-iodine diet (no sea food or anything with added iodide salt) is required for whole body scans in the case of thyroid cancer.
