Flushing from etoh: Flushing from alcohol is a common reaction and is not usually allergic. It is due to deficiency of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, an enzyme that metabolizes acetaldehyde that is produced when alcohol is metabolized. Sometimes the flush is from histamine that is released directly by ethanol's effect on mast cells; in those cases, the flushing is accompanied by itching and swelling.
