How do you know the difference between acute hives and chronic hives?

Duration of symptoms: Acute hives are usually resolved within 4-6 weeks of onset, whereas chronic urticaria last longer than 6 weeks.

6 weeks: If hives occur daily for 6 weeks, they are chronic. If the frequency or duration is less than that are still considered "acute".
