Yes - carefully: There's no real danger to the baby. The heating pad isn't likely to affect the temp inside your body (your 'core' temp) much. The danger is to yourself if you lie on the pad or overuse it to the point of burning your skin. (it happens!) a better alternative might be to get a good osteopathic hands-on exam. I've treated many back problems for pregnant women - even taught hubbies to do so at home.

Yes: A heating pad applied to the back should not have any effect on the fetus.
