One pole, or two?: A depressive disorder is a "unipolar" mood disorder. This means that there's only one pole--the south pole (depressed). A bipolar mood disorder has two poles--the south pole (depression) and the north pole (mania, which includes a persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood).
