Similar but : The pacifier is one thing a kid can throw away as s/he looses interest. Once gone, its gone. You will always have your thumb & if a kid has a weak moment & regresses, it is all to easy to revert to thumb sucking. Also the weight of the hand and pressure the thumb makes on the upper gum is a bit more likely to deform it.
