Sometimes 3 or 4: If you are seeing a specialist in child psychiatry, in some severe cases medication might be started cautiously as young as 3 years of age. This should only be done under the supervision of a sub-specialist in this area and in combination with behavioral interventions. There is research, however, showing that adhd can be reliably diagnosed and safely treated in pre-school age kids.

Variable. : Experts state that 4 years is the earliest age for medication treatment. Restricting caffeine, chocolate, red dye or otc medications is always a good first step. Behavioral therapy is helpful at any age. But in certain circumstances, medication is useful at a younger age. That's the doctors preference.

ADHD: Agree with dr. Enriquez, but any child planned to start adhd medications should have thorough evaluation by a pediatrician & blood work & ekg done first.
