Repetitive activity: Such as treadmill and ellipticals causes the foot to jam forward into the toe box of the shoe. This compresses the nerves a bit and can frequently cause a temporary numbness.

Pressing on nerves: You may be standing awkwardly on the elliptical or you may be pressing on the nerves going in to your feet. You may need an arch support, if you have flat feet, to help alleviate that pressure.
