Exam and x-ray: Fractures and ligament tears are very common injuries. An x-ray is obtained to check for a fracture and if none is found, a physical exam is performed to evaluate the collateral ligaments. Both the radial and ulnar collateral ligaments can be sprained or torn. Sprains resolve with immobilization, torn ligaments require surgical repair.
