Doesn't fit: Even if connective tissue diseases flare, the respiratory muscles work. Stopping the normal breathing cycle is not part of the flare. Stopping to breath at night suggests sleep apnea. On the other hand, the symptom of dizziness suggests hyperventilation or anxiety. It's important to have these symptoms checked out by your doctor.

Need more info: If you gain weight during flare ups, that may be causing obstructive sleep apnea. There is also the possibility of central sleep apnea due to your primary disorder. It would be prudent to discuss getting a sleep study, with your doctor.
