Over the counter...: Medications can only treat symptoms. Pyridium (phenazopyridine) and Ibuprofen can help with bladder pain, but do not fight infection. Cranberry tablets may help prevent infections, but are poor at clearing them. The one best treatment for a urinary tract infection is a full course of an appropriate antibiotic determined by urine culture. See your doctor for management.

Fluid and cranberry : Serious urinary tract infections (UTI) require antibiotics. However, many people have asymptomatic utis or symptomatic ones that go away without intervention. If you drink plenty of fluid and have frequent urination to flush out bacteria and decrease urine stasis, it decreases the risk of infection. Cranberry juice has been shown to help decrease UTI as well, but not perfect.
