What can cause joint pain with swollen ankles?

Many things: Swollen ankles with "joint pain" may be due to several forms of arthritis. Most commonly degenerative joint disease (DJD) or osteoarthritis. However, reumatoid arthritis, gout, pseudogout, lupus and septic joints may all cause joint pain with swelling. Oftentimes, this complex may be caused by two or more different problems, such as heart failure and DJD together. Check w your doc.
