Tried etanercept for sciatica?

AND???: Etanercept is a drug that works by blocking tumor necrosis factor. It has been used to try treating back pain including sciatica. A recent study published in the annals of internal medicine does not support it as more effective than steroids in the early stages, but has similar outcome 6 months down the line. There is need for more extensive studies to prove it's effective. Talk to your doctor.

Generally : It is not first line and likely without the supporting research for it, this treatment may not get insurance coverage. Epidural steroid injections are first line, but you may want to discuss your options with a spine specialist that can discuss with you your options. There are some good data coming out from stem cell based platelet therapies as well (not covered as well). Check out Regenexx.Com
