Depends: "arthritis" means joint inflammation. There are many causes of joint inflammation ranging from infectious, to autoimmune, to traumatic, to malignant. There are also many causes of joint pain that are not related to joint inflammation. Some of the causes of these diseases are known and others are not.

Post traumatic arthritis is from injury, osteoarthritis is felt to be a wearing down in articular cartilage, and in the various types of inflammatory arthritic conditions the bodies immune system. attacks the cartilage causing damage
