Slow deep breaths: It is important to try to breathe slowly and deeply with the shoulders and chest staying pretty still. That will make the diaphragm (breathing muscle at the bottom edge of the ribs) push down. Most of the time the person will feel the abdomen being pushed down or out. This type of breathing is important for effective cough to clear mucus from the lungs.
