Not the right drug: Cefixime is no longer recommended because of drug resistance. Ceftriaxone is the treatment of choice.

400 mg: Because of gradually increasing antibiotic resistance in gonorrhea, cefixime is no longer the main treatment; ceftriaxone (by injection) is recommended. However, cefixime 400 mg remains effective in many cases and is still used by some experts, but ONLY in combination with azithromycin or doxycycline. Even then, cefixime should not be used if pharyngeal (oral) gonorrhea is suspected.
