See picture: In the first half of the cycle, rising Estradiol (yellow) from a developing follicle gets high enough to induce a surge in lh or luteinizing hormone (blue). The lh surge causes ovulation 24-36 hours later, and the egg can be fertilized the next day or two. In the second half of the cycle, the cyst left after ovulation or corpus luteum (yellow at top) makes Progesterone (purple) and estradiol.
