Inadequate effect: The main problem is that epinephrine, the medicine in the epi-pen, degrades over time and becomes less active. That's a real problem when you are relying on it to save you from an allergic reaction. So if you have nothing else, it's better than nothing, but make it a point to keep your epi-pens current. You can use the old ones to practice using the device by injecting an orange or grapefruit.

0.3 mg epinephrine: Each Epipen (epinephrine) autoinjector delivers 0.3 mg of a 1:1000 Epinephrine (adrenaline) solution. An Epipen (epinephrine) jr delivers half (0.15 mg) that amount & are primarily used in children. These self-injection devices contain about 2 cc of clear liquid inside & about 80% of that remains after use. In most cases, 1 dose may be enough but if a hospital is not close by or the reaction worsens, a 2nd dose may be needed.

Unfortunately, many children are given epi-pen jr. as the wrong dose. Epi should be dosed at 0.01 mg/kg of body weight. If a child weighs more than 66 lbs., they should be prescribed the adult epipen.

Many pediatric authorities recommend Epipen 0.3 for children 55 lbs and over. The Epipen Jr is the ideal dose for a 33 lb child, and Epipen 0.3 is correct for 66 lbs and up, leaving a grey zone. We transition children to the Epipen 0.3 at 55 lbs.
