Common cold meds: The best medications for a common cold are decongestants and pain relievers. There are only 2 decongestants marketed now, phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine. The latter is more effective and you have to sign for it in the pharmacy. Pain relievers can be nsaids like ibuprofen, naproxen, or non-nsaid acetaminophen. Irrigating the nose with salt water and gargling with salt water also help.
