Not necessarily: Heartburn is the common term for gastroesophageal reflux. Reflux describes the passage of stomach contents up into the swallowing tube and throat. When it causes burning, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness or lung issues, we call it reflux disease, or gerd. Avoid fatty foods, caffeine, and chocolate. Acid suppressing medications may be needed when diet alone is not enough to control your symptoms.

Heartburn approaches: elevating head of the bed, not wearing tight clothes that cinch the abdomen, avoiding meals late at night, waiting at least 3 hrs after a meal to lie down, eat smaller meals, maintain a healthy body weight , avoid smoking, avoid alcohol, coffee, tea, caffeine & carbonated beverages. Try acupuncture, hypnosis, ginger tea, relaxation exercises. See if specific foods are triggers such as chocolate
