A member asked:

What is the relationship of a heart murmur to a hole in the heart in a child?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

A heart murmur...: ....Is an extra sound the heart makes, nothing more. Sometimes it means something is wrong (like a hole), and other times it does not. Children may have meaningless, "benign" heart murmurs with fever, dehydration, or at different ages. A hole in the heart is one of many possible causes of a murmur. It might be a tiny hole that closes on it's own, or it might be one that needs to be fixed.
