Less movement: These "long"bones have lots of muscle attachments;the less you pull on the fracture the less they hurt.

Stability: Stability either operatively or non operatively is the best way to control pain. Aside from that various medications are available. We don't recommend nsaids however for most adult fractures because of the theoretic risk of non union.
