Weeks: Swelling of the knee can take a few weeks to resolve. It should be iced aggressively. If it is not improving or if it is red, warm, draining or you have a fever, it needs to be seen by your doctor immediately. Swelling of the leg also needs to be checked to rule out for blood clots.

Several weeks: Most swelling goes down in about 2-4 weeks. Improvement in swelling depends on several factors. The surgeon getting good control of bleeding during surgery is first. The patient then needs to ice the knee post op as much as possible and cooling knee sleeves with ice machines are the best. Using a thigh high compression stocking for 3-4 weeks is very helpful during the day. Elevation is important.
