Depends on the virus: Hepatitis a is from fecal-oral hepatitis b is any body fluid and is whenever the virus is active. Hepatitis c is by blood and can happen as long as the person has virus in their blood.

Broad question!: Hepatitis is an umbrella term for "inflammation of the liver," and there are many reasons it can happen. If you are talking about viral hepatitis, then there are several different viruses, Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E. How each of them are spread is different.
