Perhaps with trauma: Any skin condition can become scabby from scratching or rubbing, even tinea or ringworm. Classically, tinea or ringworm is red, circular with a scaly "ring" at the edge. Without seeing it, it's tough to say if what you have is ringworm. I suggest seeing a dermatologist to evaluate the area. A simple scrapping of the scaly area for examination under the microscope will diagnose tinea.
