Ask Your Doc: With a congenital anomaly, your specialist should have access to a social worker who should help you navigate the system.

Read the fact sheets: at http://www.ssa.gov/disability/disability_starter_kits_child_eng.htm. to see if the congenital anomaly causes functional impairment that qualifies for SSI & Medicaid, if you are financially eligible. If impairment severity would require institutional care if something happened to both parents, apply for "Katie Beckett", which has no financial criteria, at the same time, in case of SSI denial.
