Supportive: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a scarring/inflammatory reaction in the lungs due to some insult: infection, injury, etc. You treat the underlying disorder, and it should get better. Some experts recommend steroids as well. But, this is controversial. Basically, you treat ARDS supportively: oxygen, a ventilator if needed, prevent complications, and the like.

Low stretch: The best data for supporting a patient through ARDS is to prove low pressure, rapid ventilation. Steroids, activated protein c , erc are not supported by evidence. Treating the underlaying cause is essential.
