One is medication which can retard further bone growth, the second is radiation of the affected area to stop bone growth and finally there is surgery to remove it often followed by radiation. Not all myositis ossificans causes problems particularly if it is not impinging on joint movement.

Time: Need to wait a period of time after traumatic injury for the inflammation to diminish. Usually upwards of a year. Bone scan will show decreased activity. Generally doesn't cause symptoms after a period of time. If painful and is dormant, can be surgically excised. Need to use radiation or strong antiinflammatories to prevent recurrence.
