No: Since food poisoning is caused by a toxin produced by the bacteria that acts locally on the bowel it will not be passed onto to the baby. But if you are dehydrated due to vomiting and/or diarrhea your milk supply will probably be affected.

Yes: A mom with mild food poisoning symptoms from bacteria (such as e.Coli or salmonella) and/or their toxins may continue breastfeeding. There is a chance the baby will catch the bacteria from mom, either through touch (more likely) or through the milk (less likely). The mom should talk with the pediatrician to compare the benefits of breastfeeding with the risks of transmitting disease to the baby.

No: If you are ill and the possiblility exists that you might become dehydrated due to your symptoms it is probably impractical and draining for mom. Mimimize the risks to you and your baby and talk it over with your doctor.

Yes: The lay concept of food poisoning includes two issues.Bacterial overgrowth in food can cause GI symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, cramps) & often produce fever. Good personal hygene & a focus on maintaining your hydration will minamize the effect on your milk & baby. A food reaction, allergic or otherwise could cause similar symptoms ( fever unlikely), but the breast milk should see no effect. Stay hydrated.
