A member asked:

Can a child get ra and not jra? is there a distinction? or is the j simply age related?

RA in child is JIA: Ra pattern in a child is one of the jia patterns of systemic inflammatory poly arthritis. Age makes it jia. Jra term has been changed to jia - juvenile idiopathic poly arthritis to encompass the many patterns that can occur. Jia can occur through age 15, most commonly ages 7 to 12.

No: Children under the age of 15 cannot get ra. They get juvenile idiopathic arthritis (jia) which is also an autoimmune disease affecting the joints but very different in many respects. Even as older adults, they are adults with jia. Older teenagers can develop rheumatoid factor positive polyarticulatar jia that looks very similar to RA and may develop into a disease that looks similar to ra.
