Contact precautions: Herpes is transmitted by direct contact with an infected individual. You should avoid contact with sores on anyone who has an active herpes outbreak. Herpes can also be shed between outbreaks which makes it difficult to prevent all of the time. Using a condom with any sexual contact can help prevent herpes infection. Medications can help infected persons decrease shedding as well.
