Eventually: If your symptoms have improved and you have given the disc time to heal then you should be cleared for sports. I typically will restrict may patients for 6-12 weeks depending on the severity of the symptoms and herniation. If there is concern then a good course of physical therapy will help prepare you for sports and help assess you ability to play.

Yes depending on...: This depends on the type and severity of your symptoms as well as what aggravates them or makes them feel better. Exercise is generally better than rest but it depends on the exercise & sport as to how it affects you.
