A blood clot: A thrombosis or thrombus (clot) can form in any vein anywhere in the body. These are often painful, although not always, and, depending on their location, can be very serious. A clot in one of the deep veins in the leg is a deep vein thrombosis and, if some or all of the clot breaks off and travels it can go to you lungs and be life threatening. A clot in the brain is a type of stroke.
