Why are bones predisposed to thrombus and later embolus?

Pulmonary embolism: Bones themselves do not cause a thrombus or embolus. When doctors treat bones with casts or surgery it slows the blood flow in the veins around those bones. The slowing of the blood flow is what causes the thrombus and the embolus.
