Very effective: Our patients who are on it long-term find it very effective. Ask your physician if you can talk to other people in the practice who've been a long-term. Rheumatologists are very comfortable having patients on this medicine long-term.

A 43-year-old member asked:

Is remicade (infliximab) safe overall or does it have side effects?

It has side effects: All medicines have side effects. You have to decide if the benefit you will get from it is worth the risk. The risks are well detailed in the package insert. We can't sugarcoat it but we carefully monitor and we try to avoid the side effects. I often recommend a short three month to six-month course to see if the benefit you get is worth the risk.

Why do you need it: This really depends on the medical condition being treated. Remicade (infliximab) may have no symptoms. It can have side effects like infection and if you are on it you need careful monitoring.

Infection : Our most common concern is infection. It is a tumor necrosis factor inhibitor which is a very effective anti-inflammatory biologic, but we always use caution because of concern of side effects such as infection, neurologic problems, and also sometime malignant problems.
