A member asked:

Is bleeding normal after thoracostomy?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No, but...: ...It is not uncommon to cause bleeding when placing a chest tube. This rarely would require a blood transfusion or any surgical intervention. An alternative cause of bleeding may be the process that led to the need for the chest tube to begin with. For example, it is very common to have a hemothorax (blood in chest) along with a pneumothorax following chest trauma.
