Varies: Different people describe it differently. Some say burning, others electric, others tingling, others numbness, or a seemingly paradoxical painful numbness. Still others might just say ache or cramp. In general it will first occur in the feet and gradually work up to the calves. Then the hands can be affected. When present it's very important to check feet carefully & often for cuts, scratches, etc.

Burning tingling: Sensory neuropathy is broken down into large fiber (loss of sensation, loss of proprioception) and small fiber (burning, tingling sensation). It's the small fiber component that most patients complain about. They also relate sensation of ants crawling on their feet and legs.

Pain, numbness. : Peripheral neuropathy can be caused by many tings, including diabetes, excessive alcohol use, or chemotherapy. Patients can have tingling, burning, itching, a "tight" feeling, pain, and numbness, and once it happens it's impossible to get normal sensation back. Some medications reduce the tingling, but nothing can reverse numbness.
