Several things: Decreased motion, a grinding sound on motion. If any of this exists it should be examined.

Stiffness: Arthritis is essentially cartiledge degeneration or wearing away. It can also be when there is spurring of bones. Lack of motion or stiffness is another symptom.

Other symptoms: Some patients refer to a "catch" in the ankle, like it feels like it needs to pop. If it locks up every now and then and then suddenly feels better, it could be a loose body (piece of cartilage floating in the joint fluid).
