Most dont: The acid environment of the stomach is excellent at protecting us from the things we swallow. Many bacteria and viruses can survive in the acid by forming acid resistant capsules or spores or by simply adapting to survive in acid. Acid blocking medications such as Prilosec and Nexium (esomeprazole) can increase the likelihood of infection in some cases by decreasing the effectiveness of this acid barrier.
